SpinelDuring medieval times, magnificent red gems known as "Balas rubies" found their way into many royal treasuries. These stones are in fact Spinel and one of the most famous, the Black Prince's Ruby, is set in the British Imperial State Crown. The old name is probably derived from Balascia (now Badakhashan) in Afghanistan, the supposed source of these gems. To view specific stones for purchase, please visit our Gem Gallery.
