Gemstones display an almost limitless variety in their beauty. Qualities as diverse as the fiery brilliance of diamond and the soft iridescence of pearl, the bold patterns of agate and pale translucency of jade inspire our admiration and fascination.

Light is the source of all beauty in gemstones. Interactions between minerals and light cause the intense colours of ruby and lapis lazuli, the sparkling fire of diamond and the play of rainbow colours of opal. Light reflected at the surface gives each gem a distinctive quality, such as the brilliance of a diamond. Other gems gain a radiant quality from light being scattered and reflected from its interior, as seen in the subtle soft glow of moonstone.
